Winds, the Ultimate Power of the Future?!

Finally, the world is trying to find new energy resources that could replace Oil, considering that it is a limited energy and yes, it contributes “big-time” in increasing global warming.

Experts actually started to develop new technologies to produce energy, such as the Solar power. Wind power is also maturing dramatically, as some areas of the world are actually using it to produce a mechanical power.

What is Wind energy and is it really an alternative power source?

Wind power is a clean and sustainable energy and it’s considered to be more cost-effective than other energy resources. It aims to transform the kinetic energy in the wind into a mechanical power, through using specialized turbines.

Did you know that since ancient times, people have harnessed the wind’s energy. In matter of fact, the ancient Egyptians used wind to sail ships. Later, people built windmills to grind wheat and other grains. The earliest known windmills were in old Babylon, to be then introduced to Europe during the 12th century. Starting the 1940’s, the interest for Wind power was revived, as Denmark has become the center of researches in what concerns Wind Turbines. The oil crisis in the 1970s really boosted the wind power market once again.

Moving to the mechanics of this technology, Wind turbines operate on a simple principle. The energy in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity. The turbines are usually placed on longs shafts that reach 67 meters to reach stronger winds.  Wind turbines can be built on wide land and are grouped together into wind farms, where no trees or any other kind of obstacle could hinder the movement of the winds that could reach 5.5m/s and generate up to 100 KW.

But despite the benefits of this technology that is considered to be clean and renewable, it also presents some disadvantages. Actually, its’ turbines might create a lot of noise, disturbing by that the near-by residential areas. Additionally, winds can never be predicted, so if wind strength is too low, low energy might be created. But that’s not it, turbines could also be a threat to the wild life, especially to birds and other flying creatures, due to their large scale construction.

These inconveniences did not affect this technology a lot. In matter of fact and according to the “World Wind Energy Association” report that was published on October 2016, Wind capacity reached 456 GW until half 2016. The association expected that this energy would reach 500 GW by the end of the year and to increase in 2017.

In the end, there is no doubt that wind energy constitutes an alternative solution for oil energy. It’s environment-friendly and could provide electricity, even for a limited period, to all individuals, wherever they are. From this point, it seems reasonable to expect that this energy will further develop and advance, and perhaps will be, along with the solar power, the energies of the future.
